pomegranates on tree Pomegranate TreeFor many, planting a pomegranate tree in their backyard is something on their “to-do” list. Having a wonderful and health beneficial pomegranate tree can be a great thing.

However, if you are planning on planting a pomegranate tree, take notice that the tree is best grown in hot, Mediterranean climates. Fortunately, you don’t need a large amount of space for a pomegranate tree. These usually tend to grow about 4 or 5 meters high and are ideal for a small backyard.

If you have some free time or love gardening and taking care of your plants, then a pomegranate tree might well be for you. While growing this tree may not be difficult compared to other plants, it does require maintenance and care. Keep an eye on your pomegranate tree and take out dead stems… pruning around the end of the cold season.

The branches of the pomegranate tree are not short. They should grow in an downward arch. Keeping the pomegranate tree free of fruit flies and pests is a bit of work as well, but its worth all the care in the end.

Two great reasons to consider planting a tree: For the health benefits of the pomegranate fruit or because the tree looks wonderful and is a great natural decor to your backyard.

Plant trees 6 to 8 feet apart. Dig a hole larger than the planting container. Break up the soil around the planter. Place the container in the hole so that the top of it is sitting roughly at ground level. Fill in the space around the planting container…then pile it up higher and pack it down to get rid of gaps and air holes. Hopefully, the tree will produce fruit in the second year. Pick the fruit off immediately and let the tree put all its energy into growth rather than production.

You’ll know when the tree has not yet reached fruit-bearing maturity because, until then, it will flower and then drop the flowers instead. Pomegranates ripen in the fall (between early August and late September). When the fruit has reached full color, pick one off and open it up. If there are fully-colored seeds and juice inside…then it’s reached ripeness.

When you cut open a pomegranate you will be amazed at the number of ruby-colored seeds inside.

Many are doubtful about eating the pomegranate seeds whole, since most just extract the juice. However, most of the fiber and antioxidants actually come from the pomegranate seeds.

It really comes down to personal preference… but eating pomegranate seeds is completely safe and allows you to enjoy the full benefits of the pomegranate fruit. Many just chew on all the seeds to get all the juice and then spit the seeds out.

If you don’t like the pomegranate seeds then you can make pomegranate juice… or there’s another nice method I use a lot. Take the pomegranate fruit, intact, and roll it over a hard surface just enough to release the juice from the seeds inside but not breaking the fruit’s skin. Then make a small hole and with a straw drink the juice!

Pomegranate seeds are easily separated from the white membrane that surrounds them by putting it all in a bowl of cold water, then carefully separating the pomegranate seeds. You’ll notice the white membrane floats to the top.

If you’re interested in buying pomegranate seeds to grow a pomegranate plant, be sure you have plenty of space for planting. Pomegranates grow on large trees and require time and patience. Smaller pomegranate trees that can be grown in small gardens. Make sure you buy the correct pomegranate seeds.

The pomegranate fruit season in the Northern Hemisphere is from September through February, but in the Southern Hemisphere, it runs from March through May. In the state of California in the United States, the season of the pomegranate is from October through January. Where Do Pomegranates Grow? California is well known for its cultivation and harvest of pomegranate fruit. If you live in the United States, it?s likely that the fruit you see in the market during the height of pomegranate fruit season has come from the orchards in California. The fruit in these orchards is grown primarily for juice production, but the fruits are also used for decorative purposes. The pomegranate is also successfully cultivated and grown in countries like Armenia, Iran, Pakistan, Israel, North India, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Southern Europe, tropical Africa, Turkey, the East Indies, the Mediterranean, and Azerbaijan. Cultivation to Prepare for Pomegranate Fruit Season Pomegranate trees are typically planted in medium to heavy soil, but can survive well in sandy soil as well. The key is to have irrigation and ample drainage in the soil. Trees are pruned during the winter to achieve the proper shape for growing the most fruit possible on every tree. During winter pruning, the height of the tree is pruned to the desired height (3.0 ? 3.5m) and any old, bent, or broken branches are completely removed. During the summer, some pruning is necessary to keep the tree ?open like a vase? so the fruit can grow uninhibited. Commercial pomegranate orchards are irrigated either via drip irrigation or by using micro sprinklers. The irrigation system used not only provides water for the trees, but also is the vehicle by which fertilizers are fed to the trees. The amount of irrigation varies through the pomegranate fruit season with the amount starting out rather low, but then increasing during the hotter summer days prior to harvest time. Following the harvest, very little, if any irrigation is done. During the season, the pomegranate trees and fruit must be protected from insects. The most effective methods used to be with harmful chemicals, but the growers found that those would also damage a percentage of the fruit, so they switched to organic compounds. Now, most commercial growers use an organic mix of phosphor compounds to keep the insects at bay. Thinning the Fruit Growers desire to have large pomegranate fruits instead of small ones, so in order to achieve the desired size of fruit, they must thin the trees at least once during the pomegranate season (prior to harvest). The size most growers like to see is a pomegranate fruit the size of a softball. Once a group of fruit develops, any fruits that are touching are thinned, allowing the remaining fruit to grow bigger. Harvesting During Pomegranate Fruit Season Pomegranate fruit is popular for decorating purposes, especially during the holidays, so growers are aware that the outside appearance of the fruit is very important to consumers. Growers know the fruit is ready for harvesting when the fruit makes a ?metallic? sound when tapped. The general rule is that pomegranates are ready to be harvested 6 to 7 months after the plant has flowered. The fruits are carefully picked, stalk removed, and then placed manually on a weighing machine. The pomegranates are organized in shipping boxes according to similar size and shipped to markets in the local area or across the country. The fruit doesn?t ripen further once it has been harvested, so it travels and stores well. This is one of the reasons this fruit can be shipped easily across the country. Pomegranates can be stored in cold temperatures for several months if they are harvested prior to the height of season. Healthy diet foods are raw foods, whole foods; foods that are considered ?live? rather than processed or ?dead? foods. Basically, a food is healthiest for you when it is eaten in its natural state. So many foods today are quick and easy but they?re also processed and contain unhealthy amounts of sodium and fat. Societies everywhere have seen an increase in obesity due to the convenience and ease of fast food and microwave cooking.

Think of food this way: food that is natural and in its raw state for the most part, it is healthy for you. Let?s take a look at a list of healthy diet foods that everyone should include in their daily regimen whether they?re interested in losing weight or simply becoming a healthier person overall.

Healthy and Delicious Food Choices Make Eating Interesting and Fun!

These are just a few of the foods available that are healthy and really good for you. Try a few new ones each week and soon your list of healthy foods will become longer ? then you?ll have even more choices for meals that are good for you.

Fruits ? this seems like such an easy choice, but so many people will reach for the candy or cookies before reaching for a sweet piece of fruit. Did you know that pomegranate fruit is one of the most highly recommended fruits to include in your healthy diet foods? It is an essential food for keeping the heart healthy, cholesterol down, fighting disease, and even for losing weight. Other great fruit choices include, but aren?t limited to: apples, bananas, kiwi, citrus fruit, grapes, tomatoes, and pineapple.

Vegetables ? vegetables have crunch and excellent flavor in their raw state, but can also be steamed or roasted with olive oil and garlic to bring out even more flavor. It?s easy to snack on some baby carrots and celery or to roast vegetables like green beans, zucchini, yellow squash, and broccoli.

Whole grains ? make the switch from white flour-based grains to whole grain choices. Eat brown rice instead of white rice, whole-grain pasta instead of white pasta, and so forth. Include whole grain bread, legumes, and beans too!

Lean protein ? lean meat of any kind is usually fine for a healthy diet. Just make sure the excess fat and the skin has been removed before cooking and eating. Fish is an excellent lean protein choice as well.

Fats ? yes, there are a few healthy fats that work in a healthy foods diet! Extra virgin olive oil, safflower oil, butter in small amounts, and flaxseed oil are excellent choices. As you see we have a pretty good choice of healthy diet foods.

Why Eat Healthier?

That?s a good question! The foods listed above contain essential nutrients, minerals, vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants ? these are all vital to the body. The body needs these things in order for all the organs and processes to happen naturally and to function properly. Plus, the healthier you eat, the more likely you are to enjoy a longer life!

Wouldn?t you like to have younger looking skin and have more energy? Sticking to a healthy foods diet can do that for you! You might even lose a few unwanted pounds in the process, which means you?ll feel even better!

Fruit Wine Making 6 pomegranates 1 pound of raisins 4 cups of granulated sugar 2 teaspoons of acid blend 1 teaspoon of pectic enzyme 1 teaspoon of yeast nutrient 1 campden tablet 1 package of wine yeast 12 cups water Split open the pomegranates and remove the seeds. Pour all of the seeds into a bowl.
Throw out the pits and skins.

Crush the pomegranate seeds in the bowl thoroughly.

Add all of the other ingredients to the pomegranate except the yeast.

Stir well to dissolve the sugar, and let it sit overnight. The specific gravity should be between 1.090 and 1.095.

Sprinkle yeast over the pomegranate mixture.

Stir daily for 5 or 6 days, or until the specific gravity is around 1.050.

Strain the must out and squeeze the juice lightly so that too much tannin does not escape from the seeds.

Siphon into a secondary fermenter and attach an airlock.

Tips For dry wine, rack the mixture for three weeks, and every three months for one year and then bottle.

For a sweet wine, rack for three weeks. Add 1/2 cup sugar dissolved in 1 cup wine.

Stir gently, and place back into secondary fermentor.

Repeat process every six weeks until fermentation does not restart with the addition of sugar.

Rack every three months until one year old.

The pomegranate wine may taste best if you store it for one year without drinking it.

Hi! Come see the recent health news ? pomegranate news : January 25 2011 Pomegranate Pruning Season - Continued

More facts about pruning pomegranate trees. You should prun all the small branches called "suckers" that grow up the earth all around the trunk, this way the trees will grow stronger, and your fruits will grow bigger too.

January 16 2011 Pomegranate Pruning Season

This is the right season for pruning pomegranate trees. If you grow your Pomegrante trees for fruits, you should prun all the branches that grow in the middle of the tree, this way the trees will have more sun and more air, this will make your fruits grow bigger, nicer and they will have the right beautiful colour.

January 4 2011 What's new in our Pomegranate Site?

We added a right column to our pages, for the meantime we used the same images for all the pages, in the near future we hope to use different images for every page.

December 28 2010 What's new in our Pomegranate Site?

During October 2010 we wrote a new content about Antioxidant drinks, enjoy the big selection of drinks, all made from pomegranates, they are perfect for the Holidays!

During December 2010 we wrote a new content about Fruit Diets, you are invited to read about our best Natural Pomegranate Fruit Diets.

October 14 2010 Hot Pomegranate Season! I just want to remind you, that we are in the peak of the fruit season. You can buy fresh pomegranates in the local stores, supermarkets and markets. The pomegranates can be refrigerated until around February - March. With these pomegranates you can decorate your day, eat the seeds straight from the fruit, make juice, add them to your morning yogurt or cereal, and add them to your salads and more. You can even make enough juice to freeze for when you will not be able to buy fresh pomegranates in the stores. The best way to freeze them is in glass bottles because freezing in plastic bottles are not healthy. You can also cook the pomegranate peels and use the cooked water for hemorrhoids treatment. This water can be refrigerated for a few months, the water needs to be shaked up before use. Enjoy them any way you wish, they are tasty and have many health benefits. October 12 2010 Breaking Pomegranate News! As I have told you on September 14 2010 news, on how to wrap the pomegranates in nylon socks instead of a paper bags. I just heard that the pomegranates that were wrapped in a white paper bag this year turned out white instead of red; I think it?s because of the very hot summer that we had, and therefore can only be sold for juice and not as a fruit. This happened in a few big commercial pomegranate fields that all the pomegranates were wrapped in paper bags. This caused major economic loss to these fields. The commercial whole sellers need to try to come up with some idea of how to wrap the pomegranates in a type of nylon net that will let the pomegranate breath, get sun and water and turn out in the right color. So remember for the new season to wrap the pomegranates in nylon socks or nylon nets.

October 3 2010

Home Treatment for Hemorrhoids. Over the holidays I found a wonderful treatment for hemorrhoids.
The peels of 5-6 pomegranates need to be cooked in 2 liters of pure water.
The cooked water should be put into jars and refrigerated after cooling off.
You need to drink one glass in the morning and one glass in the evening.
It works wonderfully, true it is a bit bitter but worth it.

September 14 2010

Now that the Pomegranate Season is at it's fullest.

We need to keep those pesty insects away from our lovely fruits.

I just heard of a great way to protect pomegranates from insects.

It is as easy as 1 2 3:
no chemicals, no poison and environmental friendly...

Put a nylon sock on each pomegranate instead of the paper bags which everyone else is using. the nylon sock protects the pomegranate from insects and still lets enough sun and fresh air get to the pomegranate.the pomegranate therefore gets great color and becomes bigger then the pomegranates protected by paper bag.the pomegranate then grows into a better organic, sweet, red wonderful fruit.

I wish you all a prosperous pomegranate season full with wonderful sweet and red pomegranates.

Eat and enjoy all its amazing health benefits.

Are the benefits of eating a fruit diet that includes pomegranates truly worth the effort it takes to stay on a diet of primarily fruit for three, seven, or 30 days? Let?s take a look at how the body processes fruit, how the body handles the natural sugars, and the natural benefits of eating in this unconventional, but effective manner.

Why Eat a Diet of Fruits Only?

There are three top reasons people opt to eat a diet of fruit for a short period of time or for a longer period of time, say one month.

How The Body Handles a Fruit and Vegetable Diet?

Some people mistakenly believe that eating fruit can elevate blood sugar and be a harmful diet for people with diabetes or hypoglycemia. The opposite is actually true however because of the way that the body processes fruit.

Fruit is packed with natural juices and naturally occurring enzymes. The enzymes contained in the fruit actually help the body digest the fruit into what the body can use to stimulate metabolism and detoxify the body?s organs and systems.

The enzymes give the pancreas a rest because the enzymes do nearly 99% of the digestive work by carrying the fruit sugars, vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals slowly and safely into the body?s bloodstream, which then directly benefits the cells of the body. The nutrients in fruit are absorbed directly into the body?s cells, delivering all the body needs to function at an optimal level.

Did you know that the sugars in fruit and vegetables are digested more slowly than carbohydrates? It?s true! Other foods create mucus in the body, which can slowly build up over time in the body and become impacted. Fruits and vegetables are clean foods that the body doesn?t react to in the same way as meat, bread, and heavy carbs.

Types of Fruit Diets

A fruit diet plan is not the same as a plan of juicing for weight loss. You can drink juice while on a fruit diet, but it?s recommended that you primarily eat your fruit in whole food form to get the most benefit. This is especially true if you plan to eat this type of diet for more than 7 days in a row.

The 3 Day Fruit Flush Diet is a short-term approach to losing weight and flushing the body of toxins and chemicals. The claim is that you will lose up to 9 pounds in three days on this diet.

A diet of fruit can be adopted for 7 days for further benefits, but some people want to push the detoxification process a little further and perform the diet of fruit for 30 days. A fruit diet is one of the most popular raw food weight loss programs because it is so easy to follow and there is no calorie counting involved.

Regardless of the diet you choose, be sure to check with your physician prior to starting the fruit diet. There are differing opinions about whether or not it?s a healthy pregnancy diet, so if you?re pregnant or nursing, ask your doctor if this diet is right for you.

What Fruits Do You Eat on a Fruit Diet?

Pomegranates ? packed with antioxidants, help fight disease, and naturally help detoxify the body
Blueberries, elderberries, huckleberries, blackberries, raspberries
Grapes and bananas ? most filling of the fruits
Citrus fruits ? grapefruit, tangerines, oranges, lemons, limes
Pineapple
Plums
Apples ?sour and sweet
Tomatoes
Strawberries
Olives, figs
Peaches
Cherries

Depending on the type of fruit diet you choose, you may also include olive oil or flaxseed oil in your daily regimen. It?s possible that you will supplement your intake with freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices if you?re on an extended plan, such as the 30-day fruit diet plan.

Pomegranate juice has antioxidants! What better way is there to start your day than with juice packed with cancer-fighting ingredients? Antioxidants have a proven track record for fighting free radicals, the molecules known for causing cancer and other diseases. Pomegranate juice contains the most powerful antioxidants known to scientists; even more than red wine, tea, and other juices.

Why Are Antioxidants Important to Your Health?

Pomegranate juice has antioxidants that are superpowerful and beneficial to your heart, mind, bones, and overall health. They?re called polyphenols and flavonoids. No other juice or fruit has more of these types of antioxidants than the pomegranate fruit. What do antioxidants do?
They inhibit or completely stop the oxidation process that occurs within the body and is responsible for producing free radicals. Free radicals then start a chain reaction within the body where good cells turn into cancerous cells due to damage sustained from the action of the free radicals. The chain reaction is stopped in its tracks by the polyphenols and flavonoids contained in pomegranate juice. Once the free radicals are stopped, the oxidation process is stopped, and the cells aren?t damaged or affected in such a way as to cause cancer to grow and spread within the body. Now do I have your attention?
The fact that pomegranate juice has antioxidants should be enough to make everyone want to drink at least one glass, 8 ounces, per day. How easy would it be to do that and possibly prevent the development of horrible, possibly fatal, cancer cells in your body? Research has actually shown that people with low levels of antioxidants in their bodies are more likely to develop cancer than those who get healthy, whole food and juice sources of antioxidants on a regular basis in their diet. Know what else the juice of a pomegranate could prevent? Heart disease! Initial studies are finding that because pomegranate juice has antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and nutrients, it could be a great way to prevent cardiovascular disease as well as preventing cancer. There are so many health benefits of antioxidants and diseases that can be prevented that I can't even cover them all. Go to antioxidants-make-you-healthy.com for more information.

Antioxidants can also be found in dark chocolate which goes well with pomegranates.

Did you know that if you talk to a nutritionist, they?ll tell you that red fruits and vegetables pack the most health benefits for you? Examples include pomegranate fruit, red cabbage, beet juice, and tomatoes. The other advantage of pomegranate juice is that it is much less expensive than some of the other top ranked juices, such as Acai and goji berries. If you want to make your juices stretch, consider making up your own version of a super powerful antioxidant refresher by mixing several of the juices listed above together in one drink.
